I obviously missed a key portion of Growing Up, in that I don’t give a damn about Sweet Valley High.

Goosebumps, yes, I read those.
Babysitters Club, I had memorized.
Nancy Drew, fuck yes.

But I think my mind rebelled at actively reading and presumably enjoying the endless stories of popular blonde girls — “Tee hee! I am flirty and fashionable! I must be a cheerleader!” “Well hooray! I write for a newspaper, so I must be the sensible one! But I’m still cute!!” — while I personally was slogging my way through middle school, gawky and fat and all over braces and glasses.

(Plus, come on. The series was written totally by ghostwriters. Have some pride, Francine Pascal.)

I can’t figure out the logic of this one either. Maybe Joseph is a family last name or something. And Jagger isn’t a terrible name for a girl, I suppose. But the whole package (especially with the “Blue” tacked on) sounds so… male.

I don’t mean to be judgmental, I have four kids and I just feel like…. similar to with “Poet”…. I would shy away from giving my kid a name that had a lot of expectations rolled into it for what I expected my kid to be like someday. For example, I know a kid whose actual legal name is Champ. I used to work with a woman whose daughter was named Princess, and I’ve known more than one “Christian” who wasn’t doing the religion any favors. Unusual names are just great, but it’s a gift to your child not to encumber them with a name she feels like she has to mold herself to. So if Poet grows up to be a math genius, well… good for her, but the jokes will get old. And I’d just hope little Jagger Joseph doesn’t get the message that “she’s the feminine one and you’re the tomboy.” All in the way she’s raised, I guess.

I just found your blog post and found it quite interesting. I watched the first 3 episodes of New Amsterdam and enjoyed them. However, they did not create as much excitement for me as the “Highlander” or “The Man From Earth” movies. Still I expect that the story is still being developed and could become quite fascinating as the series plays out.

Now, a story about a real immortal would create more excitment.

If you are serious about this subject of immortality, then you will be quite interested in my research and findings on this very topic.
